Learn two bindings, tape-sewn and drum leaf. Tape sewn binding (aka supported case binding) originated in the Renaissance and is a multi-signature sewn volume that can have a covered or exposed spine. Drum leaf binding, “invented” by Tim Ely, is an adhesive structure that opens completely flat with no centerfold stitching to interrupt artwork. Explore alternative ways to house text and images. Spend one class making decorative paper to use with the bindings.
