Beginning with the scroll, Japanese books evolved into accordion-fold bindings and later into intricately side-sewn volumes that showcase the exquisite papers for which this culture is known.

Over the course of six weeks, you will create a variety of books to use as journals, art displays, albums, and gifts while exploring the material culture and global influence of Asian book arts.

Students should bring: 

• Pencil that can be sharpened 
• Metal edged ruler
• X-acto knife with extra #11 blades 
• Scissors
• Cutting mat
• Glue stick
• Bull dog clip (2½” wide)
• Small plastic lidded container for glue 
• One sheet of Japanese decorative paper. The Paper Source (Ardmore, Paoli, Philadephia) has printed Japanese decorative paper for $7.50/sheeet. Purchase one sheet, which will be shared with the class so that we’ll have a selection around which to plan a color scheme.
