Discover the rich and fascinating world of natural color in this four-week introduction to natural dyeing on cloth. Through hands-on practice, youll learn the essential techniques that make natural dyes both beautiful and long-lasting while gaining a deeper understanding of the connection between plants, textiles, and color.
Youll explore fiber sourcing, fabric preparation, scouring, and the use of tannins and mordants to achieve lasting results. Working with a variety of dye materials, including kitchen scraps, locally grown plants, and traditional natural dyes, youll learn how to extract and use color from natural sources. The class will also cover color modification using pH and iron, as well as shibori resist techniques for creating pattern and visual interest.
Along the way, well discuss the history, science, and sustainability of natural dyeing, providing a deeper appreciation for this time-honored practice.
By the end of the course, youll have created a collection of naturally dyed fabric samples and completed a finished project by transforming a cotton or linen item of your choice, such as a shirt, baby onesie, or tea towel, using natural dyes from start to finish.
