Basic Botanical Watercolor Painting invites you to build foundational watercolor skills while learning to observe and paint botanical subjects from life. You will practice preliminary drawing, prepare for an original painting, and explore how to create volume, texture, and strong composition. You are welcome to bring a plant you would like to paint or use one provided in class.

Over the course of eight weekly sessions, you will learn how to draw flowers and leaves in pencil, use color thoughtfully, and choose brushes that support your goals. The class will also include discussion of botanical painters, opportunities to learn from their work, and time to review your progress.

Open to all levels, this class is a welcoming way to deepen your skills and enjoy the beauty of the natural world. If you have photos of favorite flowers you would like to paint, please bring them on your iPad.

Student Supply List: 

• Paper: Watercolor paper smooth surface, Hot Press preferable  
  
  • Size of paper: 19×24 inches or 11×14 inches. Paper could be Arches 22×30 inches and can be cut in half, or other watercolor paper 140 lb or 300 lb.Strathmore 400 WC paper or Canson Montvale WC Paper brand are fine.         
• Tracing paper: 9×12 inches or bigger  
• Porcelain plate for mixing colors 
• Paper towels or a small cotton cloth 
• Pencils: H, 2H  
• Kneaded eraser  
• Pencil Sharpener 
• Jar for water
• Brushes: Round brushes synthetics for watercolor, sizes: 00, 0, and 1,2,4,6  and a brush for mixing color, that is inexpensive. 
• Paint: you can bring a set of watercolor like Winsor & Newton professional or colors in tubes with basic color such as: 
  
  • Lemon Yellow
  • New Gamboge
  • Permanent Rose
  • Scarlet Lake
  • Alizarin   
  • Crimson
  • Winsor Violet
  • Prussian blue
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Sap Green
  • Manganese Blue
  • Transparent yellow W/N
  • Phthalo Blue 
  • Opera-Quinacridone red 
  • and any other colors that you would like to have during the class.
