Explore the exciting history of comics and manga through the artists, movements, and stories that helped shape the medium. This course surveys influential creators and groundbreaking styles from across the decades, introducing students to the pioneers whose work continues to inspire artists around the world.
Each class includes a sketchbook prompt inspired by the artist or movement being discussed, giving students the opportunity to put ideas into practice through drawing. Along the way, students will create superheroes, giant robots, cartoon characters, and much more while developing their own artistic skills and visual storytelling abilities.
From legendary creators such as Osamu Tezuka and Jack Kirby to influential movements like the Year 24 Group and the tradition of American comic strips, this class brings the rich and relatable history of comics and manga to life in engaging and creative ways.
