As John Ruskin once said, “If you can paint one leaf, you can paint the world.” In this two-session class, you will explore leaves while having fun and learning how to observe their texture and structure.

Your first session will focus on learning how to see and draw a leaf, including its structure and volume. During this session, you will work with pencil to practice understanding form and detail.

Your second session will focus on painting a leaf using colored pencils or watercolor.

This class is open to all levels. You are welcome to bring your own leaves, either fresh or dried, so you can draw and paint from life. Also, bring your iPad if you have photos of your favorite flowers or leaves that you would like to use as references for drawing and painting.

Student Supply List:

Watercolor Paper: Watercolor paper with a smooth surface, hot press preferable, 140 lb or 300 lb. 19” x 24” or 11” x 14”. Arches is an excellent brand. Strathmore 400 watercolor paper or Canson Montvale watercolor paper are also good.
Tracing Paper: 9” x 12” or larger
Porcelain plate for mixing colors
Paper towels or a small cotton cloth
Pencils: H, 2H, HB, 2B, 3B
Kneaded eraser
Pencil sharpener
Jar for water
Brushes: Round, synthetic watercolor brushes, sizes 00, 0, and 1,2,4,6. An inexpensive brush for mixing colors.
Watercolor Paint: A set of watercolors like Winsor & Newton professional or colors in tubes with basic color such as:
- Lemon Yellow,
- New Gamboge,
- Permanent Rose,
- Scarlet Lake,
- Alizarin Crimson,
- Winsor Violet,
- Prussian blue,
- Ultramarine Blue,
- Sap Green,
- Manganese Blue and any other colors that you would like to have during class
Colored Pencils: Derwen and Polychromos Colored pencils, or Faber Castell pencils in the colors you’d like to use during class
