Explore traditional and modern techniques as well as a wide variety of materials in this popular class. We will cover design, fabrication, installation, and some art history in our study of this amazing art form, and students will be encouraged to develop their own personal style. Students will learn how to select the proper materials for mosaic installations both interior and exterior, will acquire a working knowledge of the tools used to make mosaics, and will learn how to position mosaic pieces (tessera) in traditional patterns (andamento), becoming comfortable with both ancient and contemporary styles. Students will also be exposed to mosaics in a historic context and will begin to explore the ways that mosaic has served both as a decorative and a fine art in different periods of history. Beginners with self-driven projects are welcome!
Student Supply List:
Students should bring a comfortable pair of safety glasses, a pair of rubber dishwashing gloves, and an old terrycloth towel with them to class. Students should wear closed toe shoes in the studio. Additional supplies and tools may be purchased later in the session if needed to realize the students chosen project.
