Etegami is a Japanese-inspired folk art that combines ink and watercolor paintings with words on postcards. They are meant to be sent but can be cherished as a visual diary as well. Interest in Etegami is growing world-wide, and I have recently exhibited my etegami in group shows in Australia and France. Once people are shown how to make etegami they seem to become (happily) addicted. There are groups popping up online, on Facebook and Instagram etc. Takeaway: 1) Accessibility: This is an oddly “no pressure” art form, the motto is “Its fine to be clumsy!” so it gives beginners and those unconfident of their skills a real boost to be making “real art” right away. In addition, the necessary art materials are not expensive or extensive. 2) Connection: one is encouraged to send etegami to friends families teachers loved ones…anyone in need of a cheerful note, reminder, thank you etc. This builds and sustains connectivity. 3) International/Intercultural Exchange: there are “Open Calls” for etegami world-wide, so you can be showing your work internationally, right away! Its a fun way to meet people all over the world. 4) Skill Building: the speediness of the execution encourages the etegamist to make lots and lots of etegami…and this sheer number of works being executed speeds up the students skill-building process. Every level of experience is welcome.
