Heather Marie Scholl is a Philadelphia, PA based interdisciplinary artist addressing issues of race, gender, queerness, and trauma. Using hand embroidery, sculpture, and poetry her work crafts intimate and political stories of harm. She earned a BA in Race, Gender, and Sexuality and a MA in Fashion and Knitwear Design. Scholl has received several awards including a Fellowship at the Leslie-Lohman Museum, a Linda Lee Alter Fellowship at DaVinci Art Alliance, residency at Stove Works, Yvonne M. Kelly Mixed Media Art Prize and Brooklyn Arts Council, CERF+, and the Illuminate the Arts grants. Scholl’s work has been exhibited at Leslie Lohman Museum, New York; Pen + Brush, New York; Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Fuller Craft Museum, Boston, MA; Rokeby Museum, Ferrisburg, VT; DaVinci Art Alliance, Philadelphia, PA; among others. Her work has been written about in Slate, Cosmopolitan, i-D magazine, and BUST. From 2016-2020 she led Confront White Womanhood, an anti-racism initiative for white women and held workshops at the Women’s March, Columbia University, and others. In 2024 she was the lead instructor for Grant BLVD’s inaugural class, “Fashioning the Future Forward,” a sewing job training program for formerly incarcerated women. She currently teaches hand embroidery at various Arts Centers and offers private lessons in her art studio.
