Featuring the work of students from Ursula Majer’s Suminagashi workshops.
Suminagashi begins in stillness—a quiet surface of water waiting for the first touch of ink.
Wither each gesture, ink opens upon the surface, drifting,circling, and responding to the slightest movement. There is rhythm in the process, almost a meditation: a conversation between intention and chance, movement and stillness, holding on and letting go.
To work with water is to be present. It asks us to slow down, to notice what is unfolding, and to accept that not everything beautiful can—or should—be controlled.
No two impressions can ever be repeated. Each carries the memory of a fleeting moment: water in motion, ink finding its path, and the quiet presence of the person who was there to witness it.
Perhaps this is the poetry of Suminagashi—to guide without holding too tightly, to welcome the unexpected, and to let go.
