September 11 – October 20, 2023
Reception & Autumnal Equinox Celebration: September 22, 2023, 5:30-8 pm (Pre-register Here)
A Gathering features functional ceramic pieces including bowls, plates, cups, vases, and more created by over 30 local artists exploring the ideas of the autumnal equinox, the celebration of the harvest, and the goals and intentions they have set for themselves. These pieces are often used as we gather together around a shared table in celebration, mourning, reflection, or a simple meal, and remind us all to find purpose and beauty in the objects we use every day. All pieces are for sale.
The exhibition also features still-life paintings by Jacqueline Boyd. Boyd’s work is inspired by her deep connections to home, family, and nature that have fulfilled her day-to-day life on the coast. Boyd shows her gratitude for these elements by painting imagery of treasured spaces, places, landscapes, and daily objects such as plants, books, and personal memorabilia. Although her paintings begin as recognizable compositions, Boyd alters the perceived reality of the imagery by adding and subtracting paint and blending subjects together with one another as well as with the background. She plays with perspective, transparency, texture, and color to visualize the essence of a place or thing, rather than reproducing reality.
“It is a privilege to be able to use a functional piece of pottery made by someone’s hands. This is a shared experience between maker and user. As a maker, there is an intentional connection to the lip, body, and foot of every form. As a user, the forms require us to be mindful – slow down and pay careful attention to the small details while appreciating the beauty of something that is handmade. ”
