Main Line Art Center is proud to present It Takes A Village, featuring 14 ceramic and mixed media artists who are working under the mentorship of world-renowned ceramicist, Roberto Lugo. Together, with an original piece from Lugo, the exhibition explores ideas of traditional and non-traditional mentorship, personal and communal growth, and aims to foster the spirit of ingenuity that happens when artists work in collaboration with their communities.
“An artist is only as strong as the community that built and supports them. In my own practice, the concept of community is the foundation upon which I share familial memories and honor figures who’ve changed our world for the better. Pottery, like most crafts, has required dedicated groups of artisans for production since its inception; people who foraged the clay, sculpted or formed it on wheels, decorated surfaces, and finally stoked kilns for countless hours of firing. While ceramics in the modern day is much less physically demanding than hundreds and thousands of years ago, the importance of having an artistic community remains. In curating this exhibition of artists I’ve collaborated and worked with, I’m honored to celebrate their talent and the invaluable contributions they’ve made to my practice.”
