In this lecture, painter and art instructor Henry Martin shares his original painting series: “Goya and the Gross Clinic.” This series foments a new and provocative understanding of Eakin’s masterpiece as it refers to Goya and the “The Black Paintings” through the use of the double image. Specific depictions of “A Portrait of Samuel Gross,” alongside exact displays of the reference points in Goya’s work from which the double images arise, gives Henry’s series of sixteen paintings remarkable clarity and allows a thorough and insightful view of Philadelphia’s most important painting.
Henry will explore how this view enhances our current understanding of the crown jewel of Philadelphia’s art collects and how the reference to Goya and the double image presents a notable, if yet seldom seen, thread in American art.
