Position Summary:
Main Line Art Center seeks a knowledgeable Ceramics Program Coordinator to maintain the studios and equipment, load and fire kilns, mix glazes, and to provide support to Teaching Artists and students. This part-time, 30 hour position is multi-faceted and requires a professional demeanor, a solid background in ceramics, and a passion for art education. The Coordinator must be able to manage support staff and volunteer monitors, and have the ability to proactively problem solve. The Ceramics Program Coordinator reports directly to the Co-Executive Directors.

The schedule for this position is:

• 30 hours, flexible M-F

Compensation & Benefits:

• $22 per hour compensation
• This position includes fully funded health and dental insurance

• Staff are also encouraged to take a free class each term

Studio Maintenance & Cleaning

• Kilns: Loading and firing the electric kilns with bisque and Cone 6 work daily. Loading and firing the Cone 10 gas kiln bi weekly. Regular kiln and furniture maintenance like changing elements and grinding shelves. Some basic kiln repair is needed.
• Glazes: Monitoring glaze supply and mixing new glazes. Responding to feedback about glaze performance and adjusting when needed.
• Studios: Coordinator must develop and implement a cleaning schedule to maintain a high level of cleanliness in our well-trafficked studios. Daily and weekly cleaning that includes all floors and equipment.

Management of Support Staff & Volunteers

• Ceramics Technicians: Management of 2-3 part-time Ceramics Technicians that support the coordinator in all their duties. Addressing performance standards when needed and completing their annual reviews.
• Volunteer Monitors: Managing a schedule of Volunteer Monitors who oversee Open Studio hours.

Administrative Duties

• Creating and communicating the Open Studio calendar and the firing schedule to our community at the start of each semester.
• Ordering all clay and glaze materials as well as any equipment pertaining to the ceramics studio.
• Coordinate kiln rentals by outside groups.

Event Coordination

• Empty Bowls Event: Managing the collection of ceramic bowls for the event and communication to students and Teaching Artists about the event. Recruiting volunteers to staff the event which is held annually in November.
• Ceramics Sale: Managing the collection of ceramic seconds year-round to contribute to our sale held annually in April. Communicating to outside studios and artists as well as our own community to gain more seconds donations. Recruiting and managing volunteers to staff the event.

Teaching Artist and Student Support

• Leading the orientation of all Teaching Artists and Volunteer Monitors that are new to the studios.
• Communicating guidelines for safety and best practices to the entire community.
• Addressing Teaching Artists and student feedback respectfully with the end goal focused on problem solving and education.
• Communication with students through a semester newsletter and any flyers and notices posted on community boards in the studios.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be highly-motivated and hardworking with the ability to manage a busy studio and maintain professionalism. Previous experience in a community studio is required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Experience:

• 2 years of related experience in a community studio.
• Demonstrated experience firing gas kilns, mixing glazes, and making basic kiln repairs.
• Experience managing customer service of a large population of students and Teaching Artists.
• Knowledge of basic administrative functions, use of Microsoft office suite.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

• Must be able to remain in a standing or stationary position for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to adapt to high pace environments.
• Occasionally moving/lifting lightweight equipment and other work-related objects up to 50lbs.
• The Ceramics Program Coordinator may need to attend or oversee occasional evening or weekend events held at the Art Center, flex time will be offered on a case-by-case basis.
