Explore the possibilities of basketry techniques for sculpture! You will work with variations of traditional wire basketry, twining, and coiling using soft materials as you learn multiple weaving techniques to create everything from small baskets to large-scale installations.

You will focus on pattern and line quality in three-dimensional work, and learn how to incorporate found objects and transform a wide range of upcycled materials into woven sculptures. You will also explore ways to integrate sculptural basketry into your broader art-making practice.

During the first six sessions, you will watch demonstrations and build your own sample “library” to use as a reference for future work. In the final two classes, you will create larger, more complex forms that combine multiple techniques to realize your unique creative vision.

The course will conclude with a friendly group critique, offering feedback on completed or in-progress work and helping you gain clarity for future projects.

No prior fiber or basketry experience is necessary.
