Explore the journey from a preliminary sketch to a finished oil painting. Working from a still life setup, you’ll learn practical strategies to simplify scenes and establish strong compositions, values, and shapes. Through sketchbook drawing, you’ll build solid foundational sketches that set the stage for quick and effective painting development. Each week, you’ll strengthen your drawing and painting skills as you create compelling oil paintings from start to finish.

Student Supply List: 

• Sketchbook  
• Sharpie marker  
• 2B pencil   
• Plastic eraser  
• Kneaded eraser  
• 9″ x 12″ inch (or larger) gessoed panel, canvas, or paper (if using gessoed paper you will need a board tape or clip it to)   
• Terpenoid or odorless oil paint solvent  
• 2 small glass jars with tight sealing lids   
• Paint rags or paper towels  
• Protective gloves (gardening or medical)  
• Painting palette or palette paper  
•  Assortment of flat and filbert brushes (sizes 2 to 8)  
•  Palette knife    
• BASIC Oil Palette:
  
  • Titanium white
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Burnt umber
  • Cadmium yellow, Lemon, or Winsor Yellow
  • Yellow Ocher Light
  • Naphthol Red or Pyrrole Red (Winsor Red)  
• EXPANDED Oil Palette (these colors are not necessary but nice to have):
  
  • Phthalo blue   
  • Cadmium Green Light or Permanent green light  
  • Viridian green or Windsor Green   
  • Dioxazine purple  
  • Burnt Sienna or a red ocher
