Kandinsky believed that pure abstraction removes the human element from art, while pure figuration removes the divine. The modern artist, he said, must find the middle ground. In this course, you’ll explore a range of techniques to move seamlessly between the concrete and the abstract. Paint from life, memory, and impulse as you shift between abstraction and figuration—starting with abstract compositions and discovering figures within them, or beginning with figurative work and pushing it toward abstraction. This is the perfect class for artists eager to experiment, explore, and expand their personal style in oil paint.
