Nashay Jones

2023-2024 Resident Artist

I am Nashay Jones (they/she) and I make paintings with pixels and pigments, creating images that expose the beauty inherent in difference while amplifying the everyday, seemingly mundane moments of life. The work I create is often semi-autobiographical in nature; it is my desire to address major themes in my lived experience. Disability, identity, personhood, race, culture, gender, and sexuality are all things that impact me greatly and influence my work across a variety of mediums, both digital and traditional. I examine questions of power and privilege, of feeling cast aside, unsafe, unwanted, ugly, and without value, seeking safety, grace, and care, both in the present and in an infinite number of imagined histories and futures I create. Much of the art I make is figurative in some way, with human faces and forms as well as man-made environments featuring prominently in my work. Born and raised in Philadelphia, I hold a BA in Art from Cheyney University, an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College, and a MA in Museum Studies from the University of the Arts.
