Pocket-Sized Plein Air: A Bookmaking and Watercolor Workshop

Leslie Grossman will teach sketchbook creation on the first day and Steph Untz will teach plein air painting on the second day

Rain Date for Plein Air Painting Only: 5/5

We live in a time when capturing the world around us is as easy as pulling a phone from our pocket and snapping an image. But at times our creative minds crave more engagement with our surroundings and wish for a way to document those times in a way that wont be left at sea with all our other phone pics. Enter the Pocket-Sized Plein Air workshop! Painting en plein air (French for “in the open air”) can be an impromptu thing when all your supplies pack down to a size not much larger than your phone. Youll leave this weekend workshop with all the necessary tools and a handmade book to start your new practice as a traveling painter!

Day one will be spent in the classroom constructing a 5″x5″, drum-leaf bound (no sew!), hardcover book with pages suitable for wet medium. Playful cover embellishments will be taught so you can make your book uniquely yours. On day two we will use our new books. Everyone will receive a small watercolor palette and water brush kit. Painting tricks and techniques will be taught before we venture down the road to paint in the open air. Instruction will be geared towards creating 1-2 paintings in the books we made!
